Getting Ready for the Season Starts Here
Preparing for a new sports season involves more than buying equipment and attending practice. Before many student athletes can participate, schools and athletic organizations require a sports physical to help ensure it's safe to take part in sports activities.

What Is a Sports Physical?
A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), is a medical evaluation that helps determine whether a student athlete can safely participate in sports.
The examination gives our providers an opportunity to
- Review your child's overall health
- Identify medical concerns that may affect participation
- Discuss any previous injuries or ongoing medical conditions
While sports physicals help identify potential concerns, they are not intended to replace your child's annual wellness examination with their primary care provider.
What Is Included in a Sports Physical?
The exact requirements may vary depending on your child's school or athletic organization, but most sports physicals include a comprehensive review of your child's health and physical readiness for sports participation.
Your child's visit may include the following.
We review previous injuries, surgeries, chronic medical conditions, allergies, medications, and any family history that may be relevant to sports participation.
Height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs are recorded as part of the examination.
Vision is assessed when required to help identify concerns that could affect safe participation during athletic activities.
We listen to your child's heart and lungs and evaluate for any findings that may require additional assessment before sports participation.
The examination includes an assessment of posture, joints, flexibility, strength, and range of motion to identify injuries or conditions that could affect athletic performance or increase the risk of injury.
Once the examination is complete, we complete the required sports participation forms based on our evaluation.
One Visit for Your Physical, EKG & Paperwork
Some schools, athletic organizations, or individual medical situations may require additional cardiac screening before sports participation.
At Urgent Care & Wellness Center, we offer on-site EKG screening, allowing many student athletes to complete their sports physical and any required cardiac evaluation in one convenient location.
When additional diagnostic services are needed, we also offer:
- EKG screening
- Digital X-rays
- Laboratory testing
Having these services available during your visit can help reduce the need for additional appointments and make it easier to complete your sports clearance requirements.
When Should You Schedule Your Sports Physical?
We recommend scheduling your child's sports physical:
- Several weeks before the first practice or game
- Before school or league paperwork deadlines
- As soon as registration opens for the upcoming season
Scheduling early provides time to complete any additional evaluations or documentation that may be needed before your child begins participating.
What to Bring to Your Sports Physical Appointment
Bringing the appropriate paperwork and information helps us complete your child's evaluation as efficiently as possible. Please bring:
- School or sports participation forms
- A parent or legal guardian, when required
- A list of current medications
- Glasses or contact lenses if your child wears them
- Any medical records or documentation requested by the school or athletic organization

If We Identify a Concern During the Examination
Most sports physicals are completed without any concerns. However, if we identify a medical issue that requires further attention, we'll discuss our findings with you before your child returns to athletic activities.
Depending on the situation, we may:
Recommend follow-up with your child's primary care provider
Recommend additional diagnostic testing
Recommend postponing sports participation until additional evaluation or treatment is completed
Refer your child to a specialist when needed
Provide treatment for conditions that can be safely managed in our clinic
