EKG Screening
An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a quick, non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of your heart. At Urgent Care & Wellness Center, our providers may recommend an EKG to help evaluate certain symptoms, assess your heart rhythm, or complete specific medical or sports clearance evaluations.
With locations in Lutz and New Port Richey, our team can often evaluate your symptoms, perform an on-site EKG, review the results, and recommend the appropriate next steps during a single visit.
What Is an EKG?
An electrocardiogram, commonly called an EKG, records the electrical signals that control your heartbeat. It is completed using small adhesive electrodes placed on your chest, arms, and legs.
The test provides your provider with valuable information about your heart's rhythm and electrical activity and may help identify changes that require further evaluation.

When We May Recommend an EKG
An electrocardiogram (EKG) is one of several diagnostic tools we use to better understand how your heart is functioning. Rather than performing the test routinely, we first evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and vital signs to determine whether an EKG would provide helpful information.
We may recommend an EKG if you're experiencing:
Chest discomfort or chest pain
Heart palpitations
A rapid or irregular heartbeat
Shortness of breath
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Fainting or near-fainting episodes
Certain pre-participation sports screenings
Other symptoms that warrant further cardiac evaluation
Not every patient with these symptoms requires an EKG. Our goal is to perform the right testing at the right time based on your individual symptoms and clinical evaluation.
What Does an EKG Check?
An electrocardiogram records the electrical activity of your heart. It is a quick, painless, non-invasive test performed using small adhesive electrodes placed on your chest, arms, and legs.
We use EKG screening as one part of your overall evaluation. Combined with your symptoms and physical examination, it may help us assess:
- Heart rhythm abnormalities

What to Expect During Your Visit
An EKG screening process is straightforward and typically takes only a few minutes.
We begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, and any recent health concerns, followed by a physical examination and vital signs assessment.
Small adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest, arms, and legs to record your heart's electrical activity. The test is painless and does not involve needles or electricity being sent into your body.
Our team reviews your EKG findings alongside your symptoms, physical examination, and vital signs to better understand your condition.
Depending on your evaluation, we may recommend treatment, additional testing, follow-up care, or emergency evaluation if needed.
EKGs for Florida High School Sports Physicals
Beginning with the 2026-2027 Florida school year, high school student athletes (grades 9-12) are required to receive an EKG screening as part of their pre-participation sports clearance in accordance with Florida's updated athletic participation requirements.
At Urgent Care & Wellness Center, we make the process more convenient by offering sports physicals and on-site EKG screening at the same location. Instead of scheduling multiple appointments at different facilities, many student athletes can complete their required evaluation, EKG, and sports participation paperwork in one convenient location.
When an EKG Leads to Treatment
An EKG is only one part of your care. What matters most is how the results help guide your treatment. Depending on your evaluation and EKG findings, we may:
- Recommend medications when appropriate
- Treat symptoms that can be safely managed in an urgent care setting
- Provide guidance for monitoring your condition at home
- Recommend follow-up with your primary care provider or a cardiologist
- Arrange immediate referral to the emergency department if your symptoms suggest a more serious condition
We ensure you receive the level of care that's appropriate for your symptoms, whether that means treatment in our clinic or prompt referral for emergency care.
When Should You Go to the Emergency Room?
While urgent care can evaluate many non-life-threatening symptoms, some situations require immediate emergency medical attention.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately if you experience:
Severe or crushing chest pain
Chest pain that spreads to your arm, jaw, shoulder, or back
Severe difficulty breathing
Loss of consciousness
Signs of a stroke, including sudden weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking
Sudden confusion or altered mental status
If your symptoms suggest a possible heart attack, stroke, or another life-threatening medical emergency, do not delay seeking emergency care.
