When Is It Time to Visit Urgent Care for Injuries?

Some injuries improve with rest, ice, and home care, while others require medical treatment to prevent complications or promote proper healing.

Consider visiting Urgent Care & Wellness Center if you experience:

A cut that may require stitches or another form of wound closure

Bleeding that continues despite applying pressure

Increasing pain, swelling, or bruising after an injury

Difficulty walking, bearing weight, or using the injured area

A wound caused by a dirty object or animal bite

Concerns about your tetanus vaccination following an injury

A suspected sprain or strain after a fall, sports injury, or workplace accident

Symptoms that aren't improving with home care

How We Evaluate Your Injury

During your visit, our physicians evaluate how the injury occurred, perform a focused physical examination, and determine whether additional testing is needed.

Wound/Injury Assessment

Understanding how an injury happened often provides important clues about what may have been damaged.

Our provider will ask about your symptoms and how the injury occurred. For cuts and lacerations, your provider will carefully examine the wound to determine its depth, location, and whether underlying structures may be affected.

During the physical examination, we may assess:

Pain and tenderness

Swelling and bruising

Range of motion

Joint stability

Muscle strength

Your ability to use or bear weight on the injured area

These findings help determine whether the injury is likely affecting a muscle, tendon, ligament, or bone and guide the next steps in your care.

On-Site Digital X-Rays

Since sprains, strains, and fractures often cause similar symptoms, an X-ray may be recommended. Our on-site digital X-rays allow us to evaluate many injuries during the same visit, helping us confirm or rule out fractures without sending you to a separate imaging facility.

If your injury requires specialized or emergency care, we'll help ensure you receive the appropriate next steps.

Prompt Treatment Based on Your Injury

Your treatment plan will depend on the type, location, and severity of your injury. Our goal is to relieve pain, protect the injured area, and support a safe recovery while helping reduce the risk of complications.

For Cuts & Lacerations

After thoroughly cleaning the wound, we determine the most appropriate method of wound closure based on its depth, location, and risk of infection. Treatment may include:

  • Thorough wound cleaning and irrigation
  • Stitches (sutures), skin adhesive, or Steri-Strips® when appropriate
  • Protective dressings or bandages
  • Tetanus vaccination if recommended based on your injury and vaccination history

You'll also receive instructions on caring for your wound at home and recognizing signs that require follow-up care.

For Sprains & Strains

Most sprains and strains can be treated without surgery, but early treatment is important to reduce pain and support healing. Depending on your injury, treatment may include:

  • Bracing, splinting, or compression
  • Rest, ice, and elevation recommendations
  • Activity modification to protect the injured area
  • Pain management guidance
  • Gradual return-to-work, sports, or daily activity recommendations

If your evaluation suggests a more serious injury, we'll discuss any additional treatment or referral that may be needed.

Recovering Safely After an Injury

Proper aftercare is an important part of recovery. Before you leave, we explain how to care for your injury at home, manage your symptoms, and recognize signs that may require additional medical attention.

Wound Care & Infection Prevention

If you've been treated for a cut or laceration, proper wound care helps reduce the risk of infection and supports healing. We'll explain how to:

  • Keep the wound clean and protected
  • Change dressings as recommended
  • Watch for signs of infection, including increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or fever
  • Know when to return for reevaluation if your symptoms change

Some injuries, particularly puncture wounds or wounds contaminated by dirt or debris, may require a tetanus booster. If recommended based on your injury and vaccination history, we'll discuss this during your visit.

Recovery Recommendations

Your recovery plan will depend on the type and severity of your injury. Recommendations may include:

Rest and temporary activity modification

Ice and elevation to help reduce pain and swelling

Splinting or immobilization when appropriate

Pain management recommendations

Guidance on gradually returning to work, sports, or other daily activities

Follow-up care if your symptoms aren't improving as expected

Our goal is to help your injury heal properly while reducing the risk of further damage during recovery.

When to Visit the Emergency Room for an Injury

While many cuts, sprains, and strains can be treated in urgent care, some injuries require immediate emergency medical attention.

Go directly to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you experience:

Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding

Severe deformity of an arm or leg

Multiple injuries following a major accident

Loss of consciousness or confusion after an injury

Significant burns, electrical burns, or chemical burns

A severe crush injury

A wound with exposed bone, tendon, or muscle

Numbness or inability to move the affected limb

These injuries often require emergency imaging, surgical evaluation, or hospital-based treatment.
