Common Symptoms of Asthma
Asthma affects everyone differently, and symptoms may vary depending on the severity of your condition and the trigger causing your flare-up. Some people experience occasional symptoms, while others notice worsening breathing problems during respiratory illnesses, allergy seasons, exercise, or changes in the weather.
Common asthma symptoms include:
Wheezing
Persistent coughing
Coughing that worsens at night or early in the morning
Shortness of breath
Chest tightness
Difficulty breathing during physical activity
These symptoms can also occur with respiratory infections and other lung conditions. A medical evaluation can help determine the cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
When Should You Seek Medical Care?
Many people successfully manage asthma at home, but worsening symptoms shouldn't be ignored. If your breathing isn't improving or your symptoms are becoming more frequent, it's important to seek medical care before they become more severe.
You should consider visiting Urgent Care & Wellness Center if you experience:
- Wheezing that continues despite using your rescue inhaler
- Persistent coughing that isn't improving
- Mild to moderate shortness of breath
- Chest tightness that interferes with daily activities
- Asthma symptoms triggered by a cold or respiratory illness
- Increased reliance on your rescue inhaler
- Symptoms that disrupt sleep, work, or school
Prompt evaluation and care can help determine whether you're experiencing an asthma flare-up or another respiratory condition requiring different treatment.
Problems with Your Inhaler?
If your rescue inhaler isn't providing the relief you normally expect, it's important to have your symptoms evaluated rather than continuing to rely on repeated doses.
Our providers can help if you:
- Feel your inhaler isn't working as well as usual
- Have run out of your rescue inhaler
- Are unsure whether you're using your inhaler correctly
- Need guidance on managing worsening asthma symptoms
- Are experiencing flare-ups more often than usual
During your visit, we'll evaluate your symptoms, discuss your current asthma management, and recommend the appropriate treatment or follow-up care based on your needs.
How We Evaluate Asthma Symptoms
At Urgent Care & Wellness Center, our focus is on identifying what's causing your breathing symptoms and determining the most appropriate course of treatment during your visit.
Our provider will begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, and any factors that may have triggered your asthma flare-up. During your visit, we may ask about:
- When your symptoms began
- Previous asthma diagnoses
- Current inhalers or medications
- How often you've needed your rescue inhaler
- Recent colds or respiratory illnesses
- Possible allergy or environmental triggers
- Previous emergency room visits or hospitalizations for asthma
A thorough physical examination allows us to evaluate how well you're breathing and identify signs that may indicate worsening asthma or another respiratory condition. Our team may assess:
- Your breathing pattern and effort
- Lung sounds and wheezing
- Oxygen levels
- Heart rate
- Signs of respiratory distress
This evaluation helps determine whether your symptoms can be safely managed in urgent care or require emergency treatment.
Many asthma flare-ups can be diagnosed based on your symptoms and physical examination. However, additional testing may be recommended if another condition could be contributing to your breathing difficulties.
Depending on your symptoms, we may perform on-site respiratory testing for illnesses such as influenza or COVID-19 when an infection is suspected. If pneumonia or another lung condition is a concern, on-site digital X-rays may also be recommended to help guide your diagnosis and treatment.
Treatment for Asthma & Asthma Flare-Ups
Once we've evaluated your symptoms, we'll recommend treatment based on the severity of your asthma flare-up and what's contributing to your breathing difficulties. Depending on your condition, your treatment plan may include:
On-site nebulizer breathing treatments to help relax and open your airways, making it easier to breathe during an asthma flare-up.
Medication or prescriptions, such as bronchodilators or other medications, when clinically appropriate to help manage your symptoms.
Assessment and guidance to ensure you're using your inhaler correctly and to discuss whether changes to your current asthma medications should be reviewed with your primary care provider or specialist.
Monitoring your response to treatment during your visit to evaluate whether your breathing is improving before you return home.
Home care and trigger management guidance, including practical recommendations for managing your symptoms, avoiding common asthma triggers, and knowing when to seek additional medical attention.
Follow-up recommendations with your primary care provider or pulmonologist for ongoing asthma management, particularly if your symptoms are becoming more frequent or difficult to control.
Our providers will also explain what to expect over the next few days, review warning signs that require immediate medical attention, and answer any questions you have before you leave.
The goal is to relieve your symptoms, improve your breathing, and help you return to your normal activities as safely and quickly as possible.
When Should You Go to the Emergency Room?
While many mild to moderate asthma flare-ups can be treated in urgent care, severe breathing problems require immediate emergency medical attention.
Go directly to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you experience:
- Severe shortness of breath
- Difficulty speaking because of breathing problems
- Blue lips or fingernails
- Confusion or difficulty staying awake
- Loss of consciousness
- Symptoms that do not improve after using your rescue inhaler
- Rapidly worsening breathing
- Severe chest tightness or difficulty getting enough air
These symptoms may indicate a severe asthma attack requiring emergency treatment and continuous monitoring.
